Essay Assignment Three: Argumentative Researched Essay on Ethical Issues in a
College Education
Drawing on RRW Chapters 11, “Presenting Proposals”; 12, “Locating, Evaluating, and Preparing
to Use Sources”; 13, “Writing the Researched Essay”; 14, “Formal Documentation”; and 19,
“America’s Colleges: Issues and Concerns,” as well as outside sources, write an argumentative
researched essay on an ethical issue involving colleges today. In your argument, focus especially
on the following State of Texas Core Curriculum Outcomes and/or the rubrics assessing them:
 Recognize or identify the ethical issues involved and the implications of alternative actions to
resolve them.
 Examine the ethical values or decisions of others and consider their implications in a broader
social context
 Evaluate the ethical position, its assumptions, consequences, and any objections to it
 Develop, interpret, and express ideas through written, oral and visual communication
10
 Consider different points of view and work effectively with others to support a shared
purpose or goal
Example: Researched Argumentative Claim: Despite their apparent effort to open their gates to
a growing cadre of diverse students, colleges and universities today have paradoxically restricted
access through policies that challenge the principle of equal educational access, presenting an
ethical dilemma that demands new strategies, options, and procedures.
 The ethical issues involve a contradiction between a policy’s stated goals and its actual
implementation, and the implications of resolving the dilemma are a fundamental change in
universities’ policies.
 The ethical values suggest a way of perpetuating inequality in access to educational
opportunity.
 The ethical position of colleges assumes that the free market economy will balance out the
inequalities, but the objection is that this position amounts to a sleight-of-hand approach and
results in perpetuating, and even exacerbating, educational inequality.
 In written discourse, aspects of oral delivery or communication are part of persuasion and
are conveyed through punctuation—the use of dashes, commas, and periods to mimic pauses,
stops, and connections in speech; tone; voice; and in the editing process through correctness
rules; formatting; and presentation. The latter two are also part of visual rhetoric or
communication (e.g., the persuasive aspect of images, descriptive language, fonts [serif vs. sans
serif], type style [italic, bold, underline, shadow, capital letters], page layout, white space, visual
balance. As part of your argument, analyze some of the oral and visual aspects of a college or
university’s website or other digital and/or textual materials, and show how the analysis
supports (or contradicts) the ethical issues you’re exploring. Be sure to identify these explicitly
as aspects or features of oral and visual communication.
 You will work in small groups/teams to offer written and verbal feedback on essays
throughout the assignment.
Dorothy Seyler’s guidelines (299-300) regarding purpose and audience; content (especially
thesis and evidence); structure; coherence; sources (especially the use of paraphrase and
summary); and style may prove to be especially useful.

Consider the life-changing decision of buying a first home.

Search on an internet site for a home available for sale in your area. Given current mortgage interest rates, property tax estimates, the cost of upkeep, insurance, utilities, and other costs (at a minimum), do you believe buying this home is a wise financial decision?

Now compare the cost of rent for an apartment of similar size in the same area. How does this compare with the cost of maintaining a home for one year?

Create a short but detailed analysis of your findings that compares the total cost of the purchase of a home with the total cost to rent an apartment. Which decision is optimal? Are there any qualitative points to consider in addition to your calculation?

GUIDELINES
Writing an Outline and a Prospectus for Yourself
Consider the following questions:
What is the topic?
Why is it significant?
What background material is relevant?
What is my thesis or purpose statement?
What organizational plan will best support my purpose?
Writing the Introduction
In the introduction you will need to do the following things:
present relevant background or contextual material
define terms or concepts when necessary
explain the focus of the paper and your specific purpose
reveal your plan of organization
Writing the Body
Use your outline and prospectus as flexible guides
Build your essay around points you want to make (i.e., don’t let your sources organize your paper)
Integrate your sources into your discussion
Summarize, analyze, explain, and evaluate published work rather than merely reporting it
Move up and down the “ladder of abstraction” from generalization to varying levels of detail back to generalization
Writing the Conclusion
If the argument or point of your paper is complex, you may need to summarize the argument for your reader.
If prior to your conclusion you have not yet explained the significance of your findings or if you are proceeding inductively, use the end of your paper to add your points up, to explain their significance.
Move from a detailed to a general level of consideration that returns the topic to the context provided by the introduction.
Perhaps suggest what about this topic needs further research.
Revising the Final Draft
Check overall organization: logical flow of introduction, coherence and depth of discussion in body, effectiveness of conclusion.
Paragraph level concerns: topic sentences, sequence of ideas within paragraphs, use of details to support generalizations, summary sentences where necessary, use of transitions within and between paragraphs.
Sentence level concerns: sentence structure, word choices, punctuation, spelling.
Documentation: consistent use of one system, citation of all material not considered common knowledge, appropriate use of endnotes or footnotes, accuracy of list of works cited.
CHECKLIST ONE:
1. Is my thesis statement concise and clear?
2. Did I follow my outline? Did I miss anything?
3. Are my arguments presented in a logical sequence?
4. Are all sources properly cited to ensure that I am not plagiarizing?
5. Have I proved my thesis with strong supporting arguments?
6. Have I made my intentions and points clear in the essay?
Re-read your paper for grammatical errors. Use a dictionary or a thesaurus as needed. Do a spell check. Correct all errors that you can spot and improve the overall quality of the paper to the best of your ability. Get someone else to read it over. Sometimes a second pair of eyes can see mistakes that you missed.
CHECKLIST TWO:
1. Did I begin each paragraph with a proper topic sentence?
2. Have I supported my arguments with documented proof or examples?
3. Any run-on or unfinished sentences?
4. Any unnecessary or repetitious words?
5. Varying lengths of sentences?
6. Does one paragraph or idea flow smoothly into the next?
7. Any spelling or grammatical errors?
8. Quotes accurate in source, spelling, and punctuation?
9. Are all my citations accurate and in correct format?
10. Did I avoid using contractions? Use “cannot” instead of “can’t”, “do not” instead of “don’t”?
11. Did I use third person as much as possible? Avoid using phrases such as “I think”, “I guess”, “I suppose”.

Cost of Capital Worksheet

MBA 520 Module Eight Cost of Capital Worksheet

The assignment in this module builds on the idea of forecasting and valuation theory from Chapters 6 and 7 in Module Six by valuing a company through calculations using real data. This will strengthen your recommendation in the final project by giving you the means to provide evidence from a financial analysis. This assignment is worth a total of 100 points. See the points distribution listed with each question.

Prompt

Review the questions below and use the data provided in the question to solve the calculation. As you work through each equation, think about where the data for your company may be found to make the same calculations and how the information from these calculation can inform your recommendations for your final project. Use the non-graded discussion board in this module to ask questions of your peers to inform your responses to the questions below. This assignment must be submitted as an Excel file.
